Press Release Summary = Delphian School graduate, Bethany Rodgers, received a grant from Pepperdine University for a project of her choice. She chose to help a Christian group in Kenya.
Press Release Body = One year ago, Bethany Rodgers, graduate of The Delphian School (Class of '01) in Sheridan, Oregon and graduate of Pepperdine University (Class of '05) in Malibu, California, was awarded a monetary grant by Pepperdine's Religion Division to be applied toward a holistic service project of her choice. This September Bethany's search for a project took her across the globe to Nairobi, Kenya, where she offered her help to Made in the Streets, a Christian group founded by a missionary couple helping to rescue children living on the streets of Nairobi\'s vicious slums.
"These children survive by begging for leftovers while sniffing a glue-like mixture that serves to curb their hunger, numb their pain and take away fear," said Bethany.
The Made in the Streets program is situated on a farm 14 miles outside Nairobi and serves as a refuge for 25 boys and 15 girls, all between the ages of 14-18. Students in the program learn math, the Bible and English, in addition to various farm and trade skills. The organization aims to produce competent and employable young adults. Those who excel in their work on the farm are often given the opportunity to go to college or a trade school, made possible through the funding of various churches in America.
Bethany served one month at Made in the Streets, living alongside these teenage girls, eating, boarding, and attending classes with them. She quickly became their friend, mentor and tutor. In addition to teaching English, Bethany developed a spelling curriculum for the program's use.
"I had little free time," said Bethany. "And by the end of the first week, I had girls knocking on my bedroom door asking for additional private lessons. They certainly know how to recognize a resource and make full use of it!"
The Delphian School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school offering college preparatory, English-as-a-Second-Language and summer programs for elementary through high school students. The Delphian School is licensed to use Applied Scholastics(TM) educational services.
